Alzire, written by Voltaire in 1736, features the fictional daughter of Montezuma in the titular role. This French tragedy investigates morality in the comparative contexts of Europeans and les Americans. Thanks to Google Books, an English translation is readily available. Scholarship on the play is limited, but I recommend "Dryden's The Indian Emperour  and Voltaire's Alzire" by Merle L Perkins (1957) as a starting point.

I welcome discussion of the play or the name, particularly relative to genealogical connections to Modeste Alzire Menard (1802-1886) of Kaskaskia, Illinois, and/or Alzire Kennerly Littleford (1882-1914) of Mobile, Alabama.
